We Asked 1,400 Crypto Traders If They'd Let AI Run Their Portfolios. Most Said Yes.
We surveyed 1,400 U.S. crypto traders about how much control they're willing to hand an AI, and what it would take to trust it further. What we got back wasn't just a comfort-with-AI story. It was a map of exactly where that comfort ends, and what traders want in exchange for going further.
70% of traders would let AI manage their portfolio autonomously
Approximately 7 out of 10 traders we surveyed said they'd be comfortable letting an AI manage their portfolio without a human checking every move, either with full autonomy or within risk limits they set themselves. That's not a fringe position; it's most of the market.
Gen Z is 3.4x more ready than Boomers to let go of the wheel
The overall number hides a much sharper story underneath it. When we broke autonomy down by generation, Gen Z (38%) and Millennials (37%) were more than three times as likely as Boomers (11%) to say they'd give an AI full, unsupervised control of their portfolio.
This comes down to exposure more than anything else. Younger traders have spent their whole adult lives inside algorithmically mediated everything, what they stream, what they buy, who they match with. An agent making a trading call doesn't feel categorically different from every other recommendation they already act on. Older traders don't have that same baseline, and they're often managing decades of savings rather than a portfolio they have time to rebuild.
Younger traders trust the algorithm as much as they trust a human advisor
The same generational split shows up in a different question we asked: do you trust an AI-generated trade recommendation more than advice from a human advisor? A quarter of Gen Z and Millennial traders said yes, exactly double the rate among Gen X and Boomers.
We read this as younger traders having already normalized algorithmic advice everywhere else in their lives, and crypto trading is just the latest place that pattern shows up.
79% would switch exchanges for better AI tools
Here's the number with clear, directional implications: 8 out of 10 traders surveyed said they'd switch exchanges entirely for better AI-powered trading tools.
People want an off switch
We asked traders what would most increase their trust in an AI agent making crypto payments on their behalf. The runaway top answer, by more than two to one over anything else, was the ability to get real-time notifications and instantly revoke the AI's permissions. And unlike almost every other finding in this survey, this one didn't split by generation. Boomers and Gen Z agreed almost exactly.
That told us something we didn't expect going in: trust in autonomous AI is about knowing you can take control back the moment you want to. Autonomy and control aren't opposites here, they're the same feature.
A few more numbers worth knowing
Beyond the findings above, a handful of other stats from this wave stuck with us:
The traders surveyed say AI advice has a high success rate. Among traders who've actually followed an AI-generated trade recommendation, 55% say it worked out well and 41% call the results mixed. Only 4% say it backfired outright.
AI research is already mainstream: 51% of traders use AI tools for research or trading several times a week, and 77% have used a general AI chatbot to research a crypto position in the past three months.
Liability splits by age: Boomers are the generation most likely to say they, not the platform or the algorithm, are responsible if an AI trade goes wrong. Gen Z is more likely to point to the algorithm developer.
